Not only should you pay close attention to the staff and amenities inside, but also the facility’s exterior and surrounding neighborhood. Is the landscaping properly maintained? Are there spaces where residents can walk and socialize? Once the tour begins, talk to as many staff members as possible. You could also inquire about the ratio of staff to residents and the amount of training staff members have.
- Consider a temporary stay – By this point, you’re close to making a decision. That said, a few unknowns remain. If your loved one is up for it, try to schedule a temporary stay. It could last anywhere from a few days to an entire week. This short trial stay is arguably the most accurate way to tell what living at that particular senior living facility would be like.
- Ask your loved one where they would be happiest – It’s easy to want to choose assisted living housing without really getting an opinion from your loved one. Just remember that you’re not the one potentially living there. Make it a point to sit down with your mom or dad and ask them where they would be most comfortable and happy. Don’t lose sight of the fact that this is a difficult time for them as well.
